In this sections ripping and converting subtitles is explained. For both ripping and converting, vobsub and subrip can be used. In order to rip subtitles from a dvd it's usually necessary to rip the whole dvd to your harddisk first. This can be done using a program like DVDdecryptor. Sometimes the procedures described here can be used on the dvd itself, but often this is not the case.
Vobsub
Ripping
Press Start --> Programs in windows, locate the vobsub folder and start VobSub Configure. Make sure not to open directvobsub configure.

Press the "Open" button and browse to the folder to which the dvd was ripped. Set file types to *.ifo and open the ifo file that's in the folder. The ifo should be named something similar to, VTS_01_0.IFO, or VTS_04_0.IFO. After opening the ifo, the program will ask to select a folder that can hold a maximum of 30 MB. Usually the vobsub files will be no more than 2 or 3 MB though. Select a folder and press "ok", this will make the window pop up that is shown below

The languages shown in the top right window, are the ones that will be ripped by vobsub. The arrow buttons can be used to move a language from left to right and vice versa. A subtitle language that is moved to the left will not be present in the sub files that vobsub will make. The language selection can also be made when playing back the subs or converting them to a different format. The only reason to make the selection now is the filesize of the vobsub files (about 3 MB per language). When all is set, press "OK" to start making the sub file. This can take a while, so don't panic when it's not done in a few seconds :)

When the indexing is finished, press "OK" and close vobsub configure. Vobsub made an *.idx and *.sub file, with the same name as the *.ifo. The files can be played using directvobsub along with the a player with vobsub support, like bsplayer or mediaplayer. Converting to srt is a good idea though

Converting vobsub files to *.srt or a similar format, can be done with Subresync. This program is part of the Vobsub package. Either, right click the idx file and choose edit with subresync, or go to Start -> programs -> vobsub -> subresync and open the subs from the program. Which file to open doesn't matter, either the, idx or sub will all open the same set. The "Fps" box can be ignored.

If several languages were ripped, use the drop down box on the left, right above the render box (see. image below), to select the right language. When the subs are opened and nothing is shown in the main window, use the drop down box as well. Press the "Save as" button after setting the right language.

In the save as window, select srt as the save as type. Leave the "clear image --> letter database" box empty, unless u made a mistake and had to go back to do the sub again. Specify a name and location for the srt file and press "Save"

Now all is set to start the tedious job of converting vobsub files to a text based srt file. Enter the right character and press add for each character that appears in the "enter matching letter" window. If only half a character is shown, then press the "Extend" button until the whole character appears. If many combinations of letters are shown, like fy, or li then go back to the save window and adjust the space detection sensitivity slider, or just enter the combinations. If the subs are good quality the program will recognise each character after it's entered once. If the subs are poor quality converting can be a very annoying job. If many lines are recognized in a row, it may sometimes appear as if the program hangs. Usually this is not the case, so just be patient until the following character appears or until the subs are finished. If the subs are done, and you want to convert more languages from the same file, or the subs belong to a 2cd rip, then don't close the program, but convert them right away. The image -> letter database that was just made for the first file is still present so the second file will go much faster. If the program is closed the database is lost
Converting text based subs to srt
Subresync can be used to convert from and to different text based subtitles as well. The procedure is similar to converting vobsub files, without the need to enter all the characters. The important thing to remember is to set the right framerate when opening framebased subs like sami(*.smi) or microdvd (*.sub). Meaning this time the Fps box shown here cannot be ignored. Some more information on different formats can be found in the formats section. The framerate of a movie can be found in several ways. When the movie file is opened with bsplayer, the framerate is shown in the player window. An alternative option is using virtualdub. Open the file with virtualdub, and go to "File --> File Information" the framerate is shown in the top line of the (eg. 25.000 fps for PAL) video info
Subrip
Subrip can be used to rip and convert the subs to srt in one step. Usually ripping with subrip is faster than with vobsub. However, subrip has no extend option for characters, which can give problems sometimes. To rip the subs, open subrip and click the "VOB" icon, at the top left of the screen

In the "What to do?" window, click Open ifo, and open the ifo file, belonging to the vobs. The ifo should have a name similar to VTS_01_0.IFO, or VTS_04_0.IFO. On the left side of the window, the character matrix file option is shown. This can be used when several languages are extracted from the same set. The character matrix, is similar to the image -> letter database in Vobsub. After finishing making the srt file, the character matrix can be saved for future use. If a character matrix for the set is saved already, now is the time to open it. This speeds up the converting considerably. Make sure the "Subpictures to OCR" box is ticked and press start when all is set. The window that is shown below should pop up

The actual can conversion can start, the procedure is the same as for subresync. Enter the right character for each character shown in the "new character(s)" window. If several character matrices were saved already, the "Search for an existing Character Matrix that match for this Character" button might be worth clicking. Like the button name says it will search the exising matrices for a match. If a matching matrix exists, the conversion will be very fast. When the conversion is finshed the new srt file can be saved to a new name. If a new conversion will be started after finishing the current one, make sure to click the "clear text file" button, before starting. This button can be found in the "what to do?" window shown
